I’ve said this time and time again….. distracted driving kills. Everyone, including motorcycle riders, and especially car drivers, PLEASE, PLEASE pay attention, and SLOW DOWN! This data is sad, and scary. We should all be able to get out and ride safely, but you must be aware and alert at all times.
UPDATE: As of December, 2025 there have been 23 motorcyclists tragically killed on Long Island alone. At least 2/3 of these deaths happened in Suffolk County, NY. 1 motorcycle death is too much, this is horrible and overwhelmingly sad.
Newsday’s database of fatal crashes provides a searchable resource that gives a sense of the human loss on Long Island roads since 2023. Unlike official data, which typically is finalized about 10 months after the end of the calendar year, Newsday’s database will be updated daily based on articles and police news releases. The database includes information about the people who died, and whether they were inside the vehicle, or a pedestrian, cyclist or which includes riders of scooters and skateboards. The database is not comprehensive. Some deaths are not documented as traffic-related until the official data are finalized, and media and police reports may not cover deaths that occur days or weeks after a crash.”,
Unlike official data, which typically is finalized about 10 months after the end of the calendar year, Newsday’s database will be updated on a daily basis. It is based on articles and police press releases about crashes.
For each crash, the database includes the ages and genders of the people who died and says whether they were a driver or passenger in a vehicle, or pedestrian, cyclist or “other,” which includes riders of scooters and skateboards.
The database is not comprehensive. Some deaths are not documented as traffic-related until the official data is finalized. Media and police reports may not cover deaths that occur days or weeks after a crash. As of April 2, the database contained 190 fatal crashes in 2023, 154 fatal crashes in 2024 and 155 fatal crashes in 2025.
